The "May Day" Hardangersøm Sampler

This sampler was originally designed for the SOME EGA Chapter in May 2005 and incorporates hardangersøm as well as drawn thread and cross-stitch. A small needle book design (and supplies for it) as a companion to this sampler is also included!

Stitches include: cross-stitch over two threads, running stitch, nun’s stitch, klosters, kloster variations, satin stitch, woven bars, ribbon stitch, reversible eyelets, Danish H-Hemstitch, hemstitch, Lily’s picots, added spokes and Danish Hedebo Silk Ribbon Ruffle Edging.

The sampler is stitched on hand dyed 32ct Apple Brown Bindy linen from R & R Reproductions with hand-dyed silk threads by Vikki Clayton. All hardangersom in this sampler is stitched with Vikki's Ecru Spun Silk Perle #8 and #12. The cross stitch "blueberry motifs" are stitched with her hand-dyed silk in the "delicious" colors of Blue Violet, Verdigris and Dulse. I have used one strand of Verdigris and one strand of Dulse combined to create the foliage for the blueberry clusters. Vikki's silk threads are magnificent!

The hardangersøm border is comprised of a multitude of cutwork and needleweaving. There are four cluster motifs of the "Maine Wild Blueberry" in each corner radiating out from the central diamond design. The center star motif is cut and woven.

The finished sampler is hemstitched with the Danish H-Hemstitch technique and finished with the Danish Hedebo Silk Ribbon Edging with hand-dyed 4mm silk ribbon in the color Blue-Violet!

I finished stitching the final edging of the Hedebo Silk Ruffle, pressed the sampler and laid it on a square pillow for the night. The next morning after my shower I went back into the bedroom to find Pittypat sitting like a King on top of it all cozy! Luckily for him it wasn't damaged!

Then, when I tried to get it out from under him ~ well, have YOU ever tried to get a cat to move when he didn't want to?!
