Antique "Norwegian Cuff" Needle Book (Beginner)
A Study in Norwegian Hvitsom (Whitework)
Norwegian hvitsom is a beautiful form of needlework which is part of an all-encompassing term of stitching called pulled thread. Pulled thread embroidery is comprised of patterns which are created by pulling the threads of the fabric as the stitches are made to produce a lace-like design. the interest is in the "open patterns" rather than in the stitches themselves because most of the pulled thread stitches are not particularly attractive ~ it is the effect produced by this technique which is desired.
This project is stitched on white 32ct Belfast linen. The finished size of the folded needle book is 3" x 5" (when open 6" x 5".) The needle book is lined with decorative cotton fabric, and logger flannel is used as the "pages" on which to hold your needles. Hand-dyed 4mm silk ribbon is used as embellishment at the corners.
This magnificent sampler measures 28 1/2" square (framed 36" square.) The sampler is stiched on Antique White 32ct Belfast Linen and incorporates four, large square corner designs with four inside borders. A central section for initial is stitch in the darning stitch within overcast, cutwork bars. Each section is interlaced with the H-hemstitch technique. The sampler is hemmed with a silk ribbon Hedebo ruffle edging.
